I really wanted to say more than just basic credits about this wedding because it was so incredibly special.
I met Kerri through her daughter and she contacted me to capture a ceremony of renewal of vows with her bride. She was renewing vows with Lisa and I assumed that they were getting married officially now that gay marriage is legal in Texas,so I was thrilled and said “It's so great that you two can now marry legally in the state we live in!” to which Kerri replied,”Oh we are already married!” and I asked “Did you get married in another state at one time?..that's really cool!” ..She told me that she had a gender reassignment last year and now they are renewing their vows as women, and that they were married as a man and a woman in 1981.
I really reflected on how much bigger this ceremony really was than just a renewing of vows. This was a HUGE celebration of a family who had walked through a lot of trials and struggles beyond the usual things that could potentially create a lot of soul searching and division between people that work hard at love and staying married. I imagine they have endured and flourished in incredible ways despite everything marriage can throw and you and just that 'little bit more' over the course of their 30 + years...and perhaps even longer as I learned later that they have known one another since high school. These are two people who really know who they are ,who they love ,and how immensely they love one another. I have never seen a more incredible display of commitment to family and one another than these folks I had the honor of spending time with. Their friends and family poured out so much love and support and I can see why. This was a celebration of a woman emerging from her own quiet depths into the fullness of who she always was and now the world can visibly see it glowing and emanating in full joy from her ..every dimension of her , and Lisa loves her Kerri like the Sun! I cried a lot of happy tears at this ceremony as it was so moving to see it all radiating forward for them and their three children into a new era..It's very hard to focus through tears in a viewfinder of a camera, but this is what I got and whole lot more than I realized I was going to get from this beautiful day. I got to see that true love wins no matter what...and that love does indeed endure all things. Congratulations to Kerri and Lisa, may every day be blessed and full of love, you all have truly done the work on the inside and thank you for letting us embrace you from the outside looking in. It was beautiful day to behold.
